Unakoti Temple : The Epitome of Legend and Architectural Marvel.

Tripura has got a spiritual essence weaved around it. In the small state, you can find a lot of big and small temples diverse in their size, form of prayer, and popularity. Here, is one of the famous temples of Tripura known for its architecture, legend associated with the temples, and its religious significance.

Unakoti Temple is situated at a distance of 8 kilometers from the Kailashahar district and 178 kilometers from Agartala.

 

The Legend :

The legend associated with the temple has it that once, Lord Shiva was going to Varanasi along with one crore gods and goddesses. They stopped for the night but, Shiva warned them that they must leave before dawn. When they failed to wake up and leave, Shiva cursed them and they became stone sculptures!

Dedicated to Lord Shiva : 

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the temple, one can find the huge rock sculptures of Lord Shiva. It is a temple as old as 11 to 12 centuries as it is believed to exist since the 7th- 9th century. The temple sees a lot of tourists every year. The temple has a lot of greenery inside and around it.

The rock icons found in the temple are the mesmerizing form of art for their minute details and an aesthetic experience. One of the rock images of Shiva found in the temple, named Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava, is as high as 30 feet.

 

Ashokastami Mela : 

Every year, an annual fair is organized in the temple, called Ashokastami Mela. It takes place in April when the number of pilgrims and tourists to the temple makes a surge.
