Tokyo Olympics 2020: Mirabai Chanu wins Silver medal for India in weightlifting

Imphal, 24th July: Weightlifter Mirabai chanu bags silver medal in 49 kg category for women. She lifted a total of 202 kg (87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk) during her four successful attempts across the competition.

Mirabai bags first silver Olympic medal in weightlifting

Mirabai becomes the second Indian to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting after Karnam Malleswari’s historic bronze in 1998 and just the fifth individual to win a silver medal. After 20 years, India has won an Olympic medal in the field of weightlifting.

First two attempts of Chanu made it clear that she will get the second position

Chanu lifted 84kg and 87kg successfully in her first two attempts but failed to lift 89kg. This placed her in the second spot as China’s HOU Zhihu lifted 94kg and created an Olympic record in weightlifting.

The entire India is happy as India opens account in Tokyo Olympics 2020

Every citizen of India is now feeling proud of the Manipuri girl who did her best and got the first silver medal for India in weightlifting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted just after getting the news “Could not have asked for a happier start to @Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance.” All the sports persons, celebrities and common people of India are also celebrating the winning of Mirabai Chanu.
