Mirabai Chanu is the only women power lifter from Manipur to qualify for Tokyo Olympics. She was able to finish second in the women’s 49kg. Absolute ranking announced by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), she got the second in IWF rankings with 4133, 6172 robi points behind a chinese weightlifter Huo Zhihui.

Her Journey :

Mirabai Chanu’s entry was first sent by the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) after the confirmation of her spot in the ‘world’ quota.
Chanu became the champion of the 2017 weightlifting competition, she won bronze in the Asian Championships in Tashkent with a world record in clean and jerk in April. After that she qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai had earlier been placed fourth but the withdrawal of North Korea from the Olympic led Indian to the Second position.

Right after the five years of the devastating performance of her in Rio, It was Mirabai’s second Olympic debut. Earlier in Rio she was not even able to lift any weights in clean and jerk that forced her to withdraw from the showpiece.

Along with the people of Manipur, The chief minister of Manipur N.Biren Singh took to Twitter to congratulate the athlete on her remarkable achievement.

He tweeted “Hearty congratulations to @mirabai_chanu on qualifying for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in Women’s 49 Kg category. Mirabai Chanu has been ranked 2nd in the @iwfnet’s Absolute Ranking List in the 49 Kg category. May your hard work and dedication bring laurels to the country,”

Also, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijuju shared his good wishes to the Olympic-bound athlete from Manipur, India.
